WordPress vs. Blogger

One of the first questions that newbie bloggers encounter is which platform should they use. By far the two most popular are WordPress and Blogger, and you will find that there are many advantages of a self-hosted WordPress site.

Blogger and WordPress Hosted

Let’s start up by clearing up some confusion… Blogger and WordPress both offer hosted versions of their software which will usually have an address like mycoolblog.wordpress.com or mycoolblog.blogspot.com. This option is completely free and the platforms are very easy to use, unfortunately they are very limited in many ways. Having said that, they can be a good way to get started if you are strapped for cash and you can always migrate to a self hosted option later. The rest of this post will be about the merits of a self hosted WordPress site as Blogger does not offer this as an option.

Why Self Hosted WordPress is Better

This is one of the biggest reasons for using a self hosted option. Blogger is owned by Google, and due to this, they can take down your site at any time for any reason. Even if you use the custom domain feature, your files are still on their servers and can be deleted whenever they would like. Furthermore, if your content is flagged as spam (which is very likely due to malicious people out there), Google might delete your content forever. In short… YOU DON’T OWN YOUR BLOG

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

You can have the greatest content to ever hit the internet, but if nobody ever sees it… Well you get the picture. Search Engine Optimization or SEO is optimizing your content so that search engines like Google and Yahoo can find your content and present it to the people that are interested in it. WordPress has a tremendous amount of plugins available for just this and a lot are freely available. Blogger simply can’t compete with WordPress in this respect.

Plugins, Themes and Support

WordPress is used by 23.3% of all websites. The amount of support, third party plugins, themes and support is unrivaled. While Blogger has some options when it comes to look and feel, WordPress literally has unlimited options. Furthermore, because you have complete control over the files on your site, you can customize (or hire us to customize) every aspect of your site to your exact liking.

While this is subjective, I can tell you that a lot of spamming sites, black hat SEO affiliate pages and other cyber criminal pages are hosted on Blogger. This is due to the free nature of it and ease of masking ones identity. Because of this, Blogger sites have a certain stigma in the blogger world. This is not to say that there aren’t a lot of great sites on Blogger, just that the perception is there.

Google strictly prohibits selling a Blogger blog. With self hosted WordPress you have 100% control over your site and content.
